A five-year-old male leopard fell into a trap kept for it at Kuiyanur village in Bhavani Sagar Range here on Wednesday.
The village is located near the forest and people were complaining of sighting a leopard in the area for the past two weeks. The leopard also killed three goats and dogs recently even as residents were demanding that the forest department place a cage.
Officials placed two automatic cameras in the area to monitor the movement of the leopard. Footages retrieved from the cameras showed the movement of leopard and hence, officials placed a cage on Tuesday night.
On Wednesday morning, officials found the leopard trapped in the cage. As the news spread, villagers gathered in large numbers at the spot. Later, officials took the cage in a vehicle and released the animal in a deep forest area.
Villagers said that leopards had, so far, killed over 20 goats and wanted effective steps to be taken by the forest department to prevent the animal from venturing out of forest.
They said that livelihood was affected many times as their only income is from rearing cattle.
